Updated OSX 10.4.10 dual boot guide

posted on July 3rd, 2007

What is this?

This guide tells you how to install OSX 10.4.10 on your Intel or AMD Windows machine, dual booting with Vista. This guide is for information purposes only. This guide is for SSE3 processors only!

Why is this guide better than the previous ones I found here?

- The 10.4.10 update is now in a single updater, no need to copy paste kernels etc.
- This revision is written for uphucks new install DVD and I cleared up all confusion about step 12.

Don’t have a SSE3 processsor?

Try our 10.4.9 guide and come back later to see if there’s a SSE2 update available.

Read this before reading the guide:

There are only two ways to install OSX 10.4.10 legally on your Windows computer:
1. Become an Apple developer
2. You can also buy an Intel Mac (I would recommend the Mac Pro!), install Windows Vista on it using Apple’s Boot Camp and remove OSX completely, so that you have a legally bought osx86 licence. This method isn’t confirmed and some people say it’s illegal because the EULA says that you aren’t allowed to install OSX on non-Apple hardware.
This means that for most people it is ILLEGAL to install osx on their computer. If you aren’t an Apple developer, leave page now. This site is in no way liable or responsible for the actions of its visitors.

IMPORTANT: DOWNLOADING OSX86 (a prepatched OSX 10.4.9 install image) IS ILLEGAL.

Don’t ask me where you can download OSX86, not in a comment, not by e-mail, not by phone, not by sending a telegram and not by any other way you can imagine. Just don’t ask me. If you don’t know it and still want it, become an Apple developer or BUY A MAC!

EVEN MORE IMPORTANT: You need a processor that supports at least SSE3 to make this work.

You can check this with a program called CPU-Z (http://cpuid.com/cpuz.php).

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

- processor that supports at least SSE3 (see above)
- prepatched OSX 10.4.9 install image (see step 1. for more info)
- Vista install DVD
- chain0 (search google, you’ll find it within a few seconds)
- Custom ‘PascalW’ 10.4.10 update

Got at least SSE3? Go on and install and dual boot OSX 10.4.9 and Vista on your computer (If you already have this, scroll down to the update to 10.4.10 section)!

This part is exactly the same as in my previous guides. Scroll down o the update section if you want to read how you can update to 10.4.10

1. Get a prepatched OSX 10.4.9 install image. Search for ‘uphuck’ on usenet or bittorrent for more information about this: don’t ask me where you can find it!

2. Burn the image to an empty DVD recordable (+R or –R, no rewritable dvd!)

Use your favorite burn program for this (I recommend Nero Burning Rom or Alcohol 120%)

3. Create at least 6GB of unallocated space:

- Press the windows logo in the bottom left corner of you screen (assuming that you’re using Windows Vista)
- Right click ‘computer’ and select ‘manage’
- Select ‘Disk Management’ in the ‘Computer Management’ screen.
- Select a partition with at least 6GB of free space
- Right click it and hit ’shrink volume”, type in the amount of space to shrink (at least 6GB) and hit ‘Shrink’.
- Close all open windows.

4. Hit WINDOWS BUTTON + R and type ‘diskpart’ (without quotes)

5. Type in (press enter after you typed in a line):

list disk
select disk [the number of your disk]
create partition primary id=af
list partition
select partition [the number of your new osx partition]
active (if this doesn’t work, try ’set active’ without quotes)

6. Insert the OSX install disk and reboot your computer, follow the installation steps on your screen. Read everything carefully and select the right packages!

7. After finishing the installation, OSX should boot up. Play with it for a few moments and then proceed to the next step.

8. Insert your Vista install disk and press reboot. Boot up Vista’s install disk.

9. After booting the install disk, click repair system and press next. Open the command window and type ‘diskpart’. Then type:

list disk
select disk [the number of your disk]
list partition
select partition [the number of your windows partition]
active (if this doesn’t work, try ’set active’ without quotes)

10. Reboot into Windows Vista.

11. Copy chain0 to the root of the Vista partition (mostly C:/)

12. Press WIN+R and type ‘cmd’. And type:

bcdedit /copy {current} /d “Mac OS X” (just leave the {current} there and don’t change it)
bcdedit /enum active
bcdedit /set [ID] PATH \chain0 (replace [ID] with you identifier: http://janschneiders.googlepages.com/idosx.gif)

13. Now you can reboot your computer and you’ll see a nice dual boot menu!

14. You now have a fully working OSX 10.4.9 system.

Now you’ve got a working 10.4.9 system, go on and update it to 10.4.10 !

0. So you really have a SSE3 supporting Intel or AMD processor?

1. You need the 10.4.10 delta update for hackintosh (made by PascalW), download that.

2. Install the update, read all the instructions on your screen, don’t forget to choose ‘custom’ during the installation!

3. Reboot and pray.

4. If it works, go to step 10, if it fails, go on to the next step.

5. Boot the -v flag, this means that you have to type -v in the darwin command line.

6. Try to figure out which kext is causing the boot problem.

7. Boot with -f or -. The system should boot now. All 10.4.9 kext have been backed up in /10410backup, in your OSX partition. Copy paste the one causing the problem in your system kext folder (/system/library/extensions).

8. Type the following lines in a terminal window:

sudo chown -R root:wheel /System/Library/Extensions/
sudo chmod -R 755 /System/Library/Extensions/
sudo touch /System/Library/Extensions
sudo rm -R /System/Library/Extensions.kextcache
sudo rm -R /System/Library/Extensions.mkext
sudo rm -R /System/Library/Caches/com.apple.kernelcaches
sudo diskutil repairPermissions /

9. Reboot and pray again. Still not working? Go back to step 5…

10. Go to this page for tips about making OSX faster and changing the resolution. If you want support, head over to our IRC channel and ask your question! To make things easier, please provide all information that you can give when asking a question (computer specifications, screenshot or photo of the error, previous Tiger installs worked (yes/no) etc.)

11. Got everything working? Please post a comment with your success story!

Let me know if you have any idea or anything that i can do about it.

    Hi,
I am very exited in folowing your tutorial.
I also would like to install linux on my PC.
So if I folow your tuto I should now have 2 partitions - vista + OS X
What is the best way to install linux (using ubuntu live CD) ?
I also think I should have another partition for “My Files”.
So that would be 4 partions => Vista - Mac OS X - Ubuntu - My files
How can I make that happen?
    Thanks a lot :)

Could anyone tell me if I could install osX on my dell xps 410? Here are the specs:

    Intel Core 2 Duo 2.67 (socket 775 LGA, 65nm)(Conroe)
    4gigs of DDR2 PC2-5300 (333MHz) RAM
    ATI Radeon x1650pro 512MB PCI-e
2 250gig SATA hard drives set up on raid-0 (Intel ICH8R/ICH9R RAID Controller)
    SATA DVD+-RW
    SATA DVD-R
    Sigmatel HD Audio (Integrated)
    Intel Chipset: P965/G965
    Southbridge: Intel 82801HH (ICH8DH)
    Intel 82566DC Gigabit Network adapter

The reason I ask is the only person I’ve found from scouring google couldn’t get mac osx installed on his xps410 because of every drive in this tower being SATA and not IDE.

If there’s a way to get it installed on this PC, I’d love to know. I’m not sure if 10.4.10 works with SATA, or even if 10.4.9 does.

    To NYTE RYDER:

Your system has a good spec (above average) and you could definitely install OSX86.
SATA devices can also be recognized on Apple platform, and as for your system, i don’t
know if your BIOS has a setup that could change the interface of your HDD from SATA to IDE
and vice versa. Just like my system, i couldn’t install my winxp when my HDD configured to
SATA mode and it displays “No physical drive installed”. But when i change it into IDE mode,
the installation process now detected my HDD. After installing, i change it back again to
SATA mode which is the default/recommended setup by the BIOS.

Try this setup to your system.. hope it works!!!

Do you know of anyone using OS X with an Intel graphics card and did they have problems?

Anyone hearh about VMWare, it is a windows application that can run everything from LINUX to MAC OS X. We have to start the application, insert the OS CD and install it all in Windows itself. To run the OS we have to again start the application and start the OS from it. Ya, its kind of emulation, but it feels like the real thing. Anyone know more about it ?

    Hi,

Uphuck v10.4.9 installed a month ago or so and fully working with Nvidia titan kext. After updating to v10.4.10 the system boots. Now I see “staring Mac osx” and than it crashes with the message to shutdown the mac/pc ;-). After booting with options -f and - I see the blue screen, go black, blue again, starting mac osx and if the progress bar reaches 100% it stops with the same error message.

Booting with -v doesn’t show any real error kext or so.

Booting with -s options makes me go in command mode. Now I boot the system in single mode and somewhere it gets a kernelpanic about ACPICPUThrottle. Maybe this is causing the mac to crash when booting 10.4.10?

Anyone an idea about this ACPICPUthrottle part? Is this the cause of not being able to start v10.4.10 after using the upgrade version over the uphuck v10.4.9 (v1.3) that is/was fully working on my Acer Idea 510 system?

    Regards, Jordan.

  40. Jordan van Bergen said on August 16th, 2007 at 5:58 pm :

SUCCES! but a question about the succes storie ;-) LOL Hope someone knows the answer.

After booting with the -s option and then using
    /sbin/fsck -fy
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    sh /etc/rc

the system crashed with the following kernel panic:
    SpeedIt kext loading
    bunch of messages
    kernel panic: com.OSx86Project.kext.ACPICPUThrottle(1.0.2)@0×29f10000

So SpeedIt kext was causing for a kernel panic. The v10.4.10 update installed a new kernel. It looks like this kernel doesn’t like this SpeedIt kext. Where is the SpeedIt kext for? I thought: Let’s try the old kernel I was using on my working 10.4.9 system. So I copied this kernel to /mach_kernel and rebooted the machine, VOILA a working 10.4.10 system!

The kernel versions v10.4.10 installed looked like this:

    mach_kernel 4.171.076 bytes

The now working old kernel used on the 10.4.9 uphuck version (also working on 10.4.10 now) looks like this:

    mach_kernel 4.176.500 bytes

Anyone knows why this new kernel won’t work with the SpeedIt kext or how to get the neweste kernel to work with v10.4.10 on my system (Acer Idea 510).

    Regards, Jordan

I installed it just fine on an AMD machine and when it rebooted, it freezes at the POST. I can unplug the hard drive and it boots to an error about no operating system installed (obviously). What’s the deal?

I installed the 10.4.10 PascalW patch on an AMD machine running Uphuck’s 1.3 disk. I backed up by /System/Library/Extensions and rebooted. System daemon’s kept dying, and wouldn’t ever recover. Tried -v, - with no success. Eventually, booted into single user mode -s and copied over my old extensions back. Rebooted and now have a really great system. There’s probably a better way to fix it, but that’s why they call it “hackintosh”, right?

I’d recommend backing up your 10.4.9 kernel by sudo cp /mach_kernel /mach_kernel.old before you reboot. Also, if you want to boot a different kernel you can specify /mach_kernel.old or whatever you named it to and it’ll boot that kernel.

Thanks for the great how-to. Surely saved my hide!

    I’m in Vista and put

    bcdedit /copy {current} /d “Mac OS X”

into the command prompt and it returns

A description for the new entry must be specified.
Run “bcdedit /?” for command line assistance.

    Any help?

Hey all. I’m trying to install OS X right now using Uphuck’s 10.4.9. The DVD boots fine and I see the white/grey Apple screen with it loading, but after a minute or two a circle with a cross comes up and nothing happens. What is wrong?

Ive gotton my DVD made… did the partitions but soon as OS loads to install it doesnt show my hard drive as a destination to install what is it that I am doing wrong? I might play with it some more to make sure its not something on my part

  51. XcAbAr said on September 19th, 2007 at 12:02 pm :

Mike, the screen you are getting means the install can’t be found. Go into your bios and change your sata drive settings to IDE (or ATA) and it should load just fine (note - it will most likely break your windows install and you will have to install windows again)

Destoya, You need to access the disk utility and erase the partition you created

Well, I don’t know what I did, but after I created the partition and went to install the OS from the ‘uphuck’ 10.4.9, I rebooted into the DVD I burned and got the message NO OPERATING SYSTEM FOUND. And it wouldn’t let me do anything after that. I had to reinstall Vista, which I am doing right now, after spending a few hours using command line to copy over my data files to an external hard drive.

I am dead in the water in trying this install after the partition. What did I do wrong?

  53. Nick said on September 26th, 2007 at 4:57 pm :

I was able to do this install based on this guide, so thank you! Question though: When I did the “Shrink” command in Vista, I was only able to get a partition size of 10 GB. Now that I’ve done my OS X install, is it possible to allocate more of my free Vista Partition over to my OS X partition? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

ok I tested and it worked like a charm with Vista with its own MBR installed on one drive and OSX on its own drive. both drives are in one system, I downloaded easyBCD from here http://neosmart.net inside bios I made Vista drive to be the first to boot and OS a second in the stack (i don’t think it matters), I also downloaded chain0, ntdlr and boot.ini I put all those files in Vista C:\ edited ini file and using easy BCD I added a MAC OS X entry to Vista bootloader, rebooted and it worked. great even though I don’t know if the ini , ntdlr files were necessary, I just kept there just in case it it requires.

when trying to erase disk with disk utilies it comes up with an error saying that something happened when trying to end. Then i tried to format the partition with gparted live cd but it won’t let me format with hfs+. It just won’t let me select it. Also when i select my partition as active then shutdown to load mac osx to try stuff then shutdown that it seems to have automatically gone back to my other partition. I’m not sure if it has gone back to the partition before or after i load mac osx so this could be my problem. why is it doing this? is it normal? why cant i select hfs+?

    Help Please!!!!
I’m in a worst place than anyone. I did everything (create partition, got uphuck, made partition active) I inserted the DVD and rebooted my computer to a message “Missing operating system” rebooted my computer again and select boot sequence, selected the DVD and then the grey screen with a circle having a crosing thru it appears. I did what Kyle suggested (remove extra PCI cards and DVD drive) rebooted again but the same problem. In my case, I have not been able to find my Vista CD due to renovation in my house. I need help badly since I find my self with a non operating machine. I read what xcabar is suggesting but i can not risk to lose the data in under the C partition same partition running vista..

    Please help.
