OSX 10.4.9 / Vista dual boot (Intel/AMD)
posted on June 23rd, 2007
UPDATE: Thanks for writing a story about us macnn! Though there’s already a 10.4.10 guide available on this site…
What is this?
This guide tells you how to install OSX 10.4.9 on your Intel or AMD Windows machine, dual booting with Vista. This guide is for information purposes only.
Why is this guide better than the previous ones I found here?
This revision is written for uphucks new install DVD and I cleared up all confusion about step 12.
Read this before reading the guide:
There are only two ways to install OSX 10.4.9 legally on your Windows computer:
1. Become an Apple developer
2. You can also buy an Intel Mac (I would recommend the Mac Pro!), install Windows Vista on it using Apple’s Boot Camp and remove OSX completely, so that you have a legally bought osx86 licence. This method isn’t confirmed and some people say it’s illegal because the EULA says that you aren’t allowed to install OSX on non-Apple hardware.
This means that for most people it is ILLEGAL to install osx on their computer. If you aren’t an Apple developer, leave page now. This site is in no way liable or responsible for the actions of its visitors.
IMPORTANT: DOWNLOADING OSX86 (a prepatched OSX 10.4.9 install image) IS ILLEGAL. Don’t ask me where you can download OSX86, not in a comment, not by e-mail, not by phone, not by sending a telegram and not by any other way you can imagine. Just don’t ask me. If you don’t know it and still want it, become an Apple developer or BUY A MAC!
EVEN MORE IMPORTANT: You need a processor that supports at least SSE2 to make this work.
You can check this with a program called CPU-Z (http://cpuid.com/cpuz.php).
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- processor that supports at least SSE2 (see above)
- prepatched OSX 10.4.9 install image (see step 1. for more info)
- Vista install DVD
- chain0 (search google, you’ll find it within a few seconds)
Got at least SSE2? Go on and install and dual boot OSX 10.4.9 and Vista on your computer!
1. Get a prepatched OSX 10.4.9 install image. Search for ‘uphuck’ on usenet or bittorrent for more information about this: don’t ask me where you can find it!
2. Burn the image to an empty DVD recordable (+R or –R, no rewritable dvd!)
Use your favorite burn program for this (I recommend Nero Burning Rom or Alcohol 120%)
3. Create at least 6GB of unallocated space:
- Press the windows logo in the bottom left corner of you screen (assuming that you’re using Windows Vista)
- Right click ‘computer’ and select ‘manage’
- Select ‘Disk Management’ in the ‘Computer Management’ screen.
- Select a partition with at least 6GB of free space
- Right click it and hit ’shrink volume”, type in the amount of space to shrink (at least 6GB) and hit ‘Shrink’.
- Close all open windows.
4. Hit WINDOWS BUTTON + R and type ‘diskpart’ (without quotes)
5. Type in (press enter after you typed in a line):
list disk
select disk [the number of your disk]
create partition primary id=af
list partition
select partition [the number of your new osx partition]
active (if this doesn’t work, try ’set active’ without quotes)
6. Insert the OSX install disk and reboot your computer, follow the installation steps on your screen. Read everything carefully and select the right packages!
7. After finishing the installation, OSX should boot up. Play with it for a few moments and then proceed to the next step.
8. Insert your Vista install disk and press reboot. Boot up Vista’s install disk.
9. After booting the install disk, click repair system and press next. Open the command window and type ‘diskpart’. Then type:
list disk
select disk [the number of your disk]
list partition
select partition [the number of your windows partition]
active (if this doesn’t work, try ’set active’ without quotes)
10. Reboot into Windows Vista.
11. Copy chain0 to the root of the Vista partition (mostly C:/)
12. Press WIN+R and type ‘cmd’. And type:
bcdedit /copy {current} /d “Mac OS X” (just leave the {current} there and don’t change it)
bcdedit /enum active
bcdedit /set [ID] PATH \chain0 (replace [ID] with you identifier: http://janschneiders.googlepages.com/idosx.gif)
13. Now you can reboot your computer and you’ll see a nice dual boot menu!
14. You now have a fully working OSX 10.4.9 system.
15. Go to this page for tips about making OSX faster and changing the resolution. If you want support, If you want support, head over to our IRC channel and ask your question! To make things easier, please provide all information that you can give when asking a question (computer specifications, screenshot or photo of the error, previous Tiger installs worked (yes/no) etc.)
16. Got everything working? Please post a comment with your success story!

Still trying to get drivers for my video and sound card working. Other than that, it installed perfectly, thanks!
Note: For step 6, you should probably include an instruction for using the Disk Utility before installing OSx86. Many people aren’t able to select a drive to install to because the partition hasn’t been completely formatted properly. So, they should open up Disk Utility, select the drive (or volume of a drive) that the person wishes to install on, and then click Erase. After the partition is erased, it will be formatted to Mac OS X extended (journaled) and it will be selectable to install on.
thanks again for this.

Thanks Pags, my disk won’t show up, so I ran the Disk Utility and selected the 7GB partition I had made on my 250GB Maxtor Drive which is connected over USB 2.0, clicked Erase and now the Volume Format is Mac OS Extended (journaled) however I still cannot pick it to instsall OS X on. Can this not be installed on a USB drive? I figured as long as you can see the drive you can install to it. Anyone else ever see this?
I’m trying to install on a Dell XPS 1710 ,fully compatible with OS X according to my research.

Will it erase all data within the Vista partition after reboot?
admin said on June 26th, 2007 at 8:09 pm :
@Michael:
If you do everything carefully there’s a 99% chance that NO data will be deleted, though you’re working with a computer so everything is possible. Always backup your important things before doing something like this.

Uphuck 1.3 is awesome. I’ve got it on 2 laptops now. One is triple booting XP/10.4.6/10.4.9 and the other is triple booting Vista/10.4.6/10.4.9.
Who wants to “buy an Apple” when your existing PC is perfectly fine for running Tiger or whatever they are calling it this week!

omg thank you sooo much! I got it working successfully the 1st install. So easy. I look at other osx86 install guides on the internet and they seemed way too compilicated. I’m so happy I could cry! Everything works perfectly, including network, having issues with sound card not being detected (Soundblaster Live! 24 bit internal) and some keyboard buttons not working (Home, Insert, Shift etc) Here’s my system stats incase anyone’s interested.
Dell Dimension 1100
Intel Celeron D “Presscot” 2.53GHz SSE3
512MB SDram
Onboard 96mb intel video card
Creative Live! 24 bit internal sound card
installed osx on a 18gb partition on same hard drive as Windows Vista Ultimate

I have a dell xps 1710 it has a nVidia 7950 512MB and the only way i can get osx to boot is if i don’t install the nvidia graphics driver from the install disc. also if i install the nvidia driver from the 3rdpartydriver wiki, the next time i boot it crashes and says to reboot.
is there a “safe” mode on osx like there is on windows where i can login when something goes wrong and fix it? like uninstalling a driver if it doesn’t work?
admin said on June 29th, 2007 at 8:43 am :
@WackyMac:
You can boot in safe mode by typing:
-x
In the darwin command line before osx boots.
RRR said on June 29th, 2007 at 2:45 pm :
please translate all that in german or french; thanks!!!
paul tolbert said on June 29th, 2007 at 5:47 pm :
EDIT:
I got the sound working by using my onboard SoundMAX sound card and following the these instructions
http://forum.insanelymac.com/lofiversion/index.php/t1393.html
“Also, go into AUDIOMIDI in the utilities folder and set your output to 4 channel 16 and set the active speaker configuration to 3 and 4.
That has worked for a lot of people, myself included.”
WackyMac said on June 29th, 2007 at 10:00 pm :
Admin: Thanks for the -x command, I didn’t realize that line of text that flashes before OSX boots was typeable. I haven’t tried it yet, but I’ll try.
I decided to do the install on a different computer (first try was Dell XPS 1710 notebook, core2duo, nVidia 7950 512MB). This time I tried my tower, AMD X2 4200+, ATI X1950. Graphically, this is SO MUCH SMOOTHER. The Dell was jumpy and slow with graphics, and barely did any animation. The AMD/ATI system is smooth so far. I haven’t even loaded a graphics driver, i’m still installing.
Weird note, the animations like the blue “OK” buttons that glow, or the progress bar look normal on the AMD/ATI machine, but are super fast and all jumpy on the dell xps with nvidia 7950.
I’m really dissapointed it doesn’t run well on my dell. Thats the computer I really need it on!

With a P4C800-E Deluxe MB and a Prescott CPU with SSE3 will the OS work like in any other Mac?
Can I use all the software I have in it? (adobe, final cut and so on)
What are the differences between this 10.4.9 and 10.4.10?
Thank you!

@Michael:
Read the guide carefully and everything will go smooth and well, though there is a possibility that you need some drivers to make extra hardware working. Don’t be insulted, but I think you can understand that if I place the following lines above the guide:
[b]EVEN MORE IMPORTANT: You need a processor that supports at least SSE2 to make this work.[/b]
You can check this with a program called CPU-Z (http://cpuid.com/cpuz.php).
a question like “one more thing… how do i find out if my processor supports SSE2?” is quite stupid.
Because you’re using XP, you need to use a different partition manager. Check out my 10.4.6 guide in the h4ckers corner (see navigation bar above) for more info about the XP dual boot. The OSX part will remain the same as in this guide.
@R-o-meo:
I don’t know why, but there are a lot of reported problems with DVD-RW’s so if you want to be safe burn it to a DVD-R.
@Tom:
Just rename the file to uphuck.iso (make sure that you turned ON the file file extensions option in Windows Explorer) and burn it with Nero.
Michael said on July 5th, 2007 at 10:36 pm :
alright well cpu z is saying the instructions for the processor are MMX (+), 3DNOW! (+), SSE so i am guessing it does not support SSE2, right?

I used an old 2.0GHZ intel celeron with 767MB of ram that that I had put away. It would boot and install but at the end of the installation it needed to be restarted and this is where if stopped. The little wheel spun around but it would not restart. I left it for a few hours and it still was doing it. I restated the computer with the button and when it comes up with the screen that has the apple logo and the spinning wheel on it, a small blocked sort of symbol would appear in the middle of the apple logo. I really have no idea whats gone wrong.

Hi. My installation went smooth, but (as other people here have mentioned) I get the kernel panic when the OSX tries to boot after the installation.
Moreover, when I boot without uphuck’s DVD in the DVD drive, it gives me the ‘HFS+ partition error’.
It only boots when I insert the DVD and don’t press any key (so it won’t boot from the DVD).
I’ve tried installing with 4 different kernels (3 Intel’s and the newest generic one)… nothing!
I use an Intel Core2Duo E6600 with ASUS P5W DH Deluxe motherboard and Gigabyte GeForce 7600GS (512MB) video card.
I’ve also used various combinations of patches.
I’ve always chosen the Intel component, and all the software available. I’ve chosen what seemed to be the most appropriate drivers for my machine.
Can someone share his/her success story with a similar machine, or try to help me out with getting this to run?
Thanks a lot,
Nir

First of all, thanks for the guide. Is it true that you’ve only tested installation on the same physical hard drive of vista? I tried installing OSX on a different hard drive. After successful installation, it won’t boot. Basically the BCDEDIT trick just made an entry in the boot screen, it’s a dummy entry that won’t actually boot. And I’m pretty certain that “create partition primary id=af” won’t work on different hard drive either. For example, if your Vista is installed on physical drive a, and you are installing OSX on physical drive b. Also, what exactly does “create partition primary id=af” do? Partition your drive to Linux swapOS partition? Diskpart gives error message when I try to do that. I used Acronis to partition it to SwapOS.
But anyway, my point is: It seems that this guide won’t work for people who’s trying to install osx on a totally seperate hard drive. Can you please confirm that?
I will try to install it on the same hard drive of vista and see what will happen. I will post an update late.
admin said on July 23rd, 2007 at 10:01 pm :
@Paul:
This guide is indeed for a single hd configuration, sorry that I didn’t say that at the top.
If you want to install OSX on two seperate hard drives, chain0 won’t work and the diskpart part isn’t needed cause you can just reformat the full hd with Disk Utility on the osx install disk. Reformat it to HFS+ journaled and then install OSX on the drive. After that setup a dual boot with something like EasyBCD.
Hope that this’ll help and good luck!
@the others:
I’m on holiday now and typing this from an internet cafe. I’ll answer your questions later when I’m back.

Paul The Geek said on July 25th, 2007 at 10:43 pm :
I got it up and running now. Here’s a somewhat easy way of installing OSX on a seperate hard drive and do dual boot or triple boot of vista, xp and osx. (Depending on how comfortable you are in terms of opening up your computer case.) This way, you don’t need to worry about accidentally deleting your xp or vista during installation:
1. You need a spare IDE hard drive.
2. You need Acronis Disk Director Suite software, you will be using the OS selector function of it.
Install Acronis Disk Director and OS selector. Activate OS Selector.
Connect your spare IDE, use either partition magic or acronis disk director to make one big partition and format it to either linux shagSwap OS or FAT32. Really doesn’t matter. Make sure make the whole disk just one partition, do not leave any other unallocated space or other partition in it.
Reboot, go into bio and change the boot sequence to boot from cd/dvd drive first. Save change, reboot and shut down computer.
You need to open your computer case, if you are scared of doing that, you really shouldn’t be trying to do any of this kind of stuff.
Disconnect all the existing hard drives. Connect your spare IDE hard drive (which you will be installing osx on it) on the primary master IDE port (the blue port on some motherboard). And make sure you have your dvd rom connected on secondary master.
Put osx installation dvd in and reboot. When it boot into osx installation screen, go to disk utility and select your hard drive (there should be only one). Erase the disk using MacOS extended Journaled format. Close Disk Utility and continue installation. Select either Intel or AMD, and correct drivers and patches. Continue installation.
Once installation’s complete, took out the installation dvd and reboot. It should successfully boot into OSX now.
Important highlights to note: make sure the hard drive is partitioned into one big partition only. Make sure it’s connected to primary master during installation and first boot.
Once you’ve successfully boot it up, shut down computer. Reconnect your other hard drive (IDE OR SATA) in original order. Connect your OSX hard drive as primary slave.
Reboot, OS selector will scan your hard drives and find all bootable os, including OSX which will be marked as unknow os by OS selector, but it’s fully bootable. Now you can select which OS to boot. I’ve tested on triple boot and it works.
Very important note:
Don’t ever expect your hardware to work 100%. Max OS is designed to work with very limited set of hardware configurations and peripherals. My onboard sound and lan are not supported. My PCI Soundblaster audigy se is not supported. Good thing that my graphic card is fully supported. Though CPU is fully recognized and supported, it seems to run into problems with chess game and some of the screen savers. Haven’t searched for solutions yet. All PowerPC based application are running fine.
This experience tells me a few things:
You won’t end up having a real Mac on your PC, but somewhat limited representation of a real Mac. It’s indeed a very cheap way to experience Mac but it will be time consuming for most of those who tried.
I did this purely for fun and challenge. And I indeed learned a lot. I never expected to have a full function free Mac by the end. I may very possibly have one that’s very close to fully functional after I replace my sound and lan to compatible ones (they are all very cheap), but that’s not my intention and I don’t think anyone of us should expect that either. It will save you a lot of frustration if you don’t go in and expect a free Mac.
I’m thinking about writing a more thorough guide but don’t know where to post it.

To Ahmed Iftikhar,
Is it true that you can’t even go into the installation screen? If so, you may need to burn your dvd again. Try to burn it at lowest speed.

Have a question on STEP 3: Do we really have to use shrink volume? What if I have a slave drive with 120gig free space (required is only 6gig) then on STEP 5 I will just select that partition(120gig).
I have XP install but I didn’t see a shrink volume command on the disk management, any other way for XP to use shrink volume?

Hey admin,
I followed the guide, every thing went fine. After finishing the installation it asked me to reboot the system, i did so. After reboot i get a prompt where it asks me to select the disk i want to boo from which is Mac OS. And at the prompt Boot: when i press enter nothing happens, i have tried using -v, ? options but got nothing. I am just stuck at that screen. If I select the Windows NT partition vista boots up properly.
What could be the Problem?????
Thanks in advance

Hi man!
I’ve installed uphuck v 1.4r3 on an Acer Aspire 5622WLMi (Intel Core Duo T2300, Ati Mobility Radeon X1300, 1GB DDR2).
Installation process works fine but on first boot freezes on a screen with a grey background and the apple logo on center and Cpu seems to be not operative.
I tried to boot on -v mode and i realized that “freezing” happens when these lines are displayed:
IOAPIC: Version 0×20 Vectors 0:23
Started Cpu 01
So how can i solve this problem?? Thnaks so much!

NIR
I faced same problem as you.
I solve it with use tboot intead of chain0. I download from following website. But it is in Chinese
http://www.osxcm.cn/download
http://www.osxcm.cn/wp-content/uploads/2007/04/macosx1048/tboot.rar
Instruction:
bcdedit /copy {ntldr} /d “Mac OS X”
bcdedit /set ID device boot
bcdedit /set ID path \tboot
bcdedit /displayorder ID /addlast
Another solution:
I also found some information from internet. When using chain0, you need to press some key during darwin bootloader. As darwin bootloader set “Quiet Boot” to yes in default. So need to turn it off.
Here is the procedure (I think):
- Press F8 after select Mac OSX under Vista Bootloader
- “-s” Remark: logon using Single Mode
- nano /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist
- Modify the line Yes under Quiet Boot to No
Remark: I haven’t tried this setting at this moment. I will try it later
But I am now face another problem. I can boot up the darwin bootloader with tboot and see beautifull Apple boot up screen. But go to blank screen after that without any response. I think it is problem of graphic mode setting. I also need to change the setting of com.apple.Boot.plist. But I unable to save it as it said the file system is protected. May be it is because of the own setting problem. I will try to modify it and test it again ASAP.
Anyway thank you for the wonderful instruction in this blog. It is very intersting

@Paul:
Thanks for your guide about installing OSX in a separate drive. It helped me a lot to understand the process. But a I have a question about it:
In your guide you say that you have to attach the new hard drive to primary master IDE Port and DVD to the Secondary Master IDE Port… Well, my motherboard has just one IDE Port and many SATA so I was wondering it it would be possible to do this:
Option 1: Atach an Ide Hard Drive to Primary Master IDE and attach DVD to Primary Slave IDE.
Option 2: Atach a SATA Hard Drive working as IDE Native (Sata port) and DVD to Primary Master IDE.
Do you think it will work?
My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-965P-DQ6. I´ll show you a link to gigabyte´s product page so you could see its specs.

Thanks in advance.

Hereby my first question:
It is about installing on a 2nd HD, just like:see == POSTING 57 Paul The Geek ==
My installation started ok, but I could not see/find any destination HD to install to.
Also with diskutility I didn’t see anything: no HD’s at all, I only see the DVD where installation started from. What went wrong?
I did format my 2nd HD (500GB) in Vista and made one FAT32 partition, just a small unallocated 7Mb which cannot be removed (?). Is this OK? And do you have to give the partition a stationletter and label?
Please help me out.
Thanks,
Rein
