OSX 10.4.9 on your normal Intel/AMD computer (no dual boot)

posted on April 14th, 2007

Why did you wrote this guide?
I wrote this guide because I get around 10 e-mails a week with people asking if it’s possible to get a clean OSX only installation. This guide covers every single detail about installing OSX 10.4.9 on a regular Intel/AMD computer. I think most of you don’t need this guide and are way more interested in this guide about dual booting OSX and Vista.

What is this?
This guide tells you how to install OSX 10.4.9 on your Intel or AMD Windows machine. This guide is for information purposes only.

Read this before reading the guide:
There are only two ways to install OSX 10.4.9 legal on your Windows computer:
1. Become an Apple developer
2. You can also buy an Intel Mac (I would recommend the Mac Pro!), install Windows Vista on it using Apple’s Boot Camp and remove OSX completely, so that you have a legally bought osx86 licence. This method isn’t confirmed and some people say it’s illegal because the EULA says that you aren’t allowed to install OSX on non-Apple hardware.
This means that for most people it is ILLEGAL to install osx on their computer. If you aren’t an Apple developer, leave page now. This site is in no way liable or responsible for the actions of its visitors.

IMPORTANT: DOWNLOADING OSX86 (a prepatched OSX 10.4.8 install image) IS ILLEGAL. Don’t ask me where you can download OSX86, not in a comment, not by e-mail, not by phone, not by sending a telegram and not by any other way you can imagine. Just don’t ask me. If you don’t know it and still want it, become an Apple developer or BUY A MAC!

You need a processor that supports at least SSE2 to make this work.
You can check this with a program called CPU-Z (http://cpuid.com/cpuz.php).

Got at least SSE2? Go on and install OSX 10.4.8 on your computer (If you already have a working 10.4.8 configuration, scroll down to read the steps about updating to 10.4.9):

1. Get a prepatched OSX 10.4.8 install image, we’ll update to 10.4.9 in the next section.

2. Burn the image to an empty DVD recordable (+R or –R)

Use your favorite burn program for this (I recommend Nero Burning Rom or Alcohol 120%)

3. Make sure that you’ve backupped all important data on your computer. In the next few steps we’re going to format your hard disk and install OSX, this means that good old Windows and all data on the hard disk will be removed.

4. Insert the OSX install disk and reboot your computer.

5. Make sure you boot the DVD. When the grey Apple stops spinning (this can take upto 15 minutes), select your Language (I’ll choose English for this guide)

6. On the top of the screen, click ‘Utilities’ and then ‘Disk Utility’.

7. Disk Utility starts. Select your Hard Disk (the whole Hard Disk, not just a partition). Hit the erase tab and set the Volume Format to “Mac OS extended (journaled)”. Hit Erase.

8. Wait until the process finishes and close Disk Utility (by clicking the red dot at the top left corner of the screen).

9. Follow the installation steps on your screen, select the HD with the partition you made in step 6 and don’t forget to choose ‘customize’ if your install DVD has a customize button. In the Customization window, select either the Intel or OSX. Choose more packages if they apply.

10. After finishing the installation, wait for the computer to reboot, remove the install disk and start playing with your native OSX installation!

11. You now have a fully working OSX 10.4.8 system.

UPDATE TO 10.4.9: INTEL SSE3:

1. Make sure you have an Intel processor that supports SSE3. You can check this with CPU-Z.

2. Download koolkal’s reloaded combo update.

3. Install the update

4. That’s all! You now have a fully working OSX 10.4.9 non-Mac computer! Go to http://www.hackint0sh.org/ for support.

UPDATE TO 10.4.9: INTEL SSE2 (only use this if your processor doesn’t support SSE3):

1. Make sure you have an Intel processor that supports at least SSE2. You can check this with CPU-Z.

2. Download koolkal’s reloaded combo update (SSE3 only, but that doesn’t matter if you use the following steps for installation).

3. Go to irc://irc.hackint0sh.org and join channel #1049 (you can do this with an IRC client like mIRC)

4. Read the topic and copy paste the download URL of the newest Intel SSE2 kernel in your browsers address bar and hit enter to download it.

5. Backup your extensions folder (/System/Library/Extensions/) and mach_kernel (from your root).

6. Install the combo update, but don’t press restart afterwards!

7. Delete /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext (maybe not needed).

8. Unpack the 8.9.1 SSE2 kernel that you’ve downloaded from the IRC channel, rename it to “mach_kernel” and place it into root (overwrite the old kernel). You can do this in the command line using “cp /unpacked/kernel/path /mach_kernel”

9. Make sure AppleSMBios.kext is in your extensions folder, if not, copy it from the backed up 10.4.8 extensions folder and paste it in /System/Library/Extensions/ (you can do this in the command line using “cp -R /1048_backup/Extensions/AppleSMBios.kext /System/Library/Extensions/”)

10. Repair the disks permissions using Disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities). Select your OSX partition, click the First Aid tab and click the Repair Disk Permissions button.

11. Restart your computer and start playing with your new 10.4.9 configuration! Go to http://www.hackint0sh.org/ for support.

UPDATE TO 10.4.9: AMD SSE3 (warning: This is still very experimental):

1. Make sure you have an AMD processor that supports SSE3. You can check this with CPU-Z.

2. Download tubgirl’s 10.4.9 update from the regular place.

3. Go to irc://irc.hackint0sh.org and join channel #1049 (you can do this with an IRC client like mIRC)

4. Read the topic and copy paste the download URL of the newest AMD SSE3 kernel in your browsers address bar and hit enter to download it.

5. Download dsmos.kext from the same channel.

6. Boot into OSX if you weren’t already in it. Backup your extensions folder (/System/Library/Extensions/), you can do this in the command line using “cp -r /System/Library/Extensions /1048/” and mach_kernel (from your root) (cp /mach_kernel /mach_kernel_old).

7. Install the update, but don’t press restart afterwards!

8. Unpack the 8.9.1 SSE2 kernel that you’ve downloaded from the IRC channel, rename it to “mach_kernel” and place it into root (overwrite the old kernel). You can do this in the command line using “cp /unpacked/kernel/path /mach_kernel”

9. Copy paste the backed up applesmbios.kext in your (new) extensions folder (cp -R /1048/Extensions/AppleSMBios.kext /System/Library/Extensions/).

10. Remove /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagment.kext.

11. Copy the unpacked dsmos.kext in the /System/Library/Extensions/ folder.

12. Delete AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext from /System/Library/Extensions/.

13. Repair the disks permissions using Disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities). Select your OSX partition, click the First Aid tab and click the Repair Disk Permissions button.

14. Reboot your computer and start playing with your new 10.4.9/Vista dual boot configuration! Go to http://www.hackint0sh.org/ for support.

9. Remove /System/Library/Extensions/AppleIntelCPUPowerManagment.kext.

10 Delete AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext from /System/Library/Extensions/.

OPTIONAL: Copy the system.kext from the disabled extentions and the loginwindow.app from 10.4.8 (thanks to RyanThaDude29 for this addition)

11. Repair the disks permissions using Disk Utility (in /Applications/Utilities). Select your OSX partition, click the First Aid tab and click the Repair Disk Permissions button.

12. Reboot your computer and start playing with your new 10.4.9/Vista dual boot configuration! Go to our forums for support.

AFTER THE UPDATE (Intel and AMD):

1. Spread the word about OSx86 and enjoy using the best operating system ever made (don’t make a comment stating Linux is better, it is better for some purposes, I know that, but for 99% of the people on this small earth OSX is the best).

You don’t really mention how well it will run on non-Mac hardware, I guess it depends on what you try it on but is it really like running it on a Mac?

Here is an Article on just that question:

    Hi There,

I bought a G5 when they first came out, was very happy with it, until after about 2 years the logic board fried itself and the computer became completely useless! After taking it to many mac repair guys, the cheapest price i could find for a new logic board was around £750.. oh dear.
I was recently talking to a friend of mine, he told me he’d heard about OSX86, and that I might be able to replace my fried logic board with a new, cheaper Intel one, and that I might be able to revive my dead computer!
I was just wondering if you think this would work, and also if you know if any of the other existing components in my G5 would be compatible, or whether I would have to buy other new items.

    Thanks for your time

    All the best

    Robbie

    My set up is:
    Asrock Conroe945-DVI
    1GB DDR2 667
    250GB SATA HDD
    Superdrive (DVR-110)
    Intel Core 2 Duo 1.86Ghz
    GMA 950 64MB
    ALC888 HD Audio
    RTL 10/100/1000

I installed the JaS combo update, and it works, except that for some reason the clock seems to have issues keeping the right time, and the CPU speed is underclocked in the “About This Mac” section. I am just sticking with 10.4.8, with the security updates installed.

You can find the answer to your questions on the uphuck(www.uphuck.com) website, but the answer you’re both looking for is here.

–> Your partition that OSX is installed is not active and contains no Boot Flag.
~ Use Gparted Live cd and by using harddrive manager set “Boot Flag” to the OSX partition.

Maybe u have to use a dongle for ur extern monitor connection. Try to plug an external monitor on this connection and reboot. This works for me.

    Hi,

    Hi,

    I am installing uphuck’s 10.4.9 1.4i alongside my XP.
I created a primary partition of 30Gb for that matter, format it to AF (using the diskpart commands) and installed the release correctly on it. I used GPart Live CD to set it as active, but when the computer boots into this partition, I get: Error loading operating system.

I am told by the uphuck’s team that the release is fine, but that the problem is from my partition. I don’t know how that can be, I tested 10.4.1 and it ran smoothly on it.

    Can you please help?
    Thanx
